Energy and Emissions Benefits of Recycled Materials and Warm-Mix Asphalt Usage (2024)

This second annual report showcases the energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission benefits associated with adopting warm-mix asphalt (WMA) technologies and using recycled materials in asphalt production.

Since 2009, NAPA has conducted an annual survey in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to quantify industry adoption of these environmentally friendly practices.

The findings of this report are intended to complement the Asphalt Pavement Industry Survey on Recycled Materials and Warm-Mix Asphalt Usage: 2024.

    Key takeaways

    • The use of recycled materials continues to be the primary driver for reducing the industry’s carbon footprint.
    • The 2024 data on WMA reveal a small but notable shift: while the average temperature reduction per ton was slightly lower than in 2023, the industry produced a higher total volume of mix at reduced temperatures overall.
