Determining the Environmental Impact of Recycled PFAS-Containing Pavement Materials

Stage 1 – Phase 1: Encapsulation and Leaching of Artificially Spiked Pavements

This report examines the environmental impact and reuse potential of PFAS-contaminated asphalt and concrete pavement materials at airports and other facilities impacted by firefighting foams. The study evaluated how PFAS behave when recycled pavement materials are incorporated into new pavements, including their potential to leach into the environment or volatilize during asphalt production. Laboratory testing assessed PFAS encapsulation under multiple conditions to help inform future guidance for the safe recycling and management of impacted pavement materials.
